TEDI-London reawarded Turing Scheme funding

We are excited to announce that TEDI-London secured funding under the UK Turing Scheme, which will support our third year students in their Global Design Engineering Individual Project module abroad. This marks the second consecutive year that we have received support from the Turing Scheme, underscoring our commitment to offering students international experiences.

What is the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme is a UK government initiative designed to support students in education and training to study and work abroad. By providing funding to educational institutions, the programme aims to enhance students’ global employability, foster international relationships and encourage the development of new skills. The Turing Scheme plays a crucial role in the government’s ‘Global Britain’ agenda, promoting worldwide connections and opportunities.

How will the money be spent?

The funding we were awarded will primarily cover travel expenses, accommodation, visas and living costs for the students participating in the study abroad placement. The funding will significantly reduce the financial burden associated with international study, enabling our students to focus on their academic work. Additional support will also be available for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with special educational needs, ensuring that every student has equal access to this invaluable opportunity.

This year, we are on track to send an increased number of students to UNSW Sydney and Arizona State University, two of our key partners, where they will spend 20 weeks immersed in a top tier global university environment. UNSW Sydney ranks within the top 20 universities globally in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, and Arizona State University ranks in ranks #1 in the USA for Innovation (U.S. News & World Report, 9 years, 2016–2024), offering our students a chance to experience world-class education while building personal and professional networks. Each student will be paired with an academic mentor at UNSW Sydney and ASU, ensuring they receive tailored guidance and support throughout their stay, similar to the mentorship provided to students completing their projects in the UK.

“I’m really excited that our Turing Scheme application has been approved again! It’s a perfect fit for our global design engineering students, giving them the chance to gain international experience as part of their degree. What’s even better is that we can offer additional financial support to disadvantaged students, making sure everyone has the same opportunities to explore and learn from different cultures” said Briony Black, Assistant Registrar Education at TEDI-London.

Why was TEDI-London’s application granted?

TEDI-London’s successful application for Turing Scheme funding followed a competitive process. Our proposal was recognised for its alignment with four key objectives:

Supporting Global Britain: The study abroad programme is designed to develop and enhance global partnerships while providing a high quality educational experience.

Promoting social mobility: The programme ensures equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their background, by offering financial support to those in need.

Building career skills: The international experience will help students develop both academically and personally, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in their future careers.

Adding social value: The project is designed to deliver social benefits by broadening students’ perspectives and preparing them to become knowledgeable, contextually aware engineers.

As our students prepare for their upcoming journey, the next steps include securing accommodation and completing necessary preparations for their time abroad. Briony noted, “The projects our students will undertake at UNSW Sydney and ASU are incredibly exciting and we are eager to see how they will apply what they learn to real world engineering challenges.”
