Student perspective: Starting a TEDI-London degree in January

At TEDI-London, we offer two intake options: September and January. Starting in January means you’ll have a more intensive first term to catch up with the course content. Rob, a mature student who began his journey with us in January 2023, shares his experience and offers advice for anyone considering a January start.

Before joining TEDI-London…
I had worked in quite a few different industries: a 3D design company, in logistics for Lidl, digital marketing, and music production. I hadn’t found anything that fully interested me or that I felt I could get my teeth into to progress my career.

I was actually looking for electrician’s apprenticeships and whilst researching, the TEDI-London website popped up. Just taking one look at it, the practical nature of the course and the new way of teaching engineering really aligned with my experience in industry. It felt like what I’d be learning here was something that I would genuinely be able to use to progress my career, not just a piece of paper! So I came to an open day and the rest is history.

Starting my studies in January was…
Pretty intensive, but it was a good fit for me. It gives you the opportunity to deep dive into the course material, and get your study skills up to scratch as well. The January starter groups are quite a bit smaller, so you get to know the staff and your peers really well. That was something that really helped me a lot as I hadn’t been in major education for a long time.

The intensive first term means you catch up with the September starters for the start of second year…
And it’s actually really useful having gone through a term that has had three modules in it. The speed of how you work and the efficiency that you need to work to in a three module term, means that when you go down to two modules, you feel like ‘wow, I’m so on top of work now!’

My advice to anyone considering starting in January would be…
Absolutely go for it. It’s hard work but worth every second. You get to hit the ground running and it puts you in really good stead for the rest of your time here. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
